Kryptonopolis: the city of Jor-El and Lara where Kal-El is born
Share
Kryptonopolis is the city of Jor-El and Lara, the one where Kal-El is born before the ship leaves the planet. It is not Kandor, and it is not Argo City. In this article you get where the name comes from, how the Silver Age made it the capital after Kandor was stolen, what the indexes date, and what the films show instead. By the end you will know which file to open without mixing three Kryptonian cities.

What Kryptonopolis names
The name is a readable calque: the « polis » of Krypton. In late Golden Age encyclopedias it is the city where Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van live, and where Kal-El is born, before the ship leaves. It is not a Metropolis district, nor a nickname for the Fortress of Solitude.
DC Database and the DCU Guide date the first catalogued appearance to Superman #159, cover-dated February 1963, a story by Edmond Hamilton drawn by Curt Swan. The issue is an imaginary story (« Lois Lane, the Super-Maid of Krypton »). The name itself stays that of the birth city in the continuity that follows. We do not invent a founding date: the sources do not give one.
Action Comics #246 (November 1958) uses the same word for an Earth housing estate, an island off Metropolis renamed after a real-estate scam. That is not the Kryptonian city. Two homonyms, two files.
Silver Age notes do not make it a numbered metropolis. You read a name, a function — capital after Kandor — sometimes a tower. No street plan, no census. Enough to file the place, not enough for a tour. When a later story changes the capital's name, we note it as a variant: the Hamilton and Swan index word remains Kryptonopolis.
The Silver Age fixes the capital
In Hamilton and Swan, Kryptonopolis becomes capital after Brainiac shrinks Kandor and carries it off. The city is therefore not « the first capital of all time »: it takes over. The Great Superman Book (Fleisher, 1978) adds that an ancestor, Gam-El, designed its architecture, and that a Red Tower was the landmark. Those are period notes, not a cadastre published issue by issue.
When the planet explodes, the city dies with it. One story has the Man of Steel photograph the light that left before the explosion, then give the plates to a museum: that is a Silver Age image, not a visit you can make. Rao still lights those pages; the yellow sun only enters after the arrival on Earth.
After Kandor, not instead of Argo
Three cities keep coming up in searches, and they do not overlap. Kandor is stolen, miniaturised, then often kept under glass. Argo City is the city of Kara Zor-El, a fragment that survives for a time under a dome. Kryptonopolis is the city of Kal-El's parents, destroyed with the planet.
Saying « he comes from Kandor » is wrong in the majority version: he comes from the house of El in Kryptonopolis. Saying « Argo is his hometown » mixes up the cousin and the son of the House of El. The silo closes by keeping the three doors apart.
The house of Jor-El and Lara
The myth fits in one room: a scientist the Council will not hear, a mother who places the child, a ship. The full origin is told elsewhere. Here the place matters: without a city, the origin is only a lab. The pages show an interior, rarely a street plan. We invent neither a district nor a numbered population.
The father and the mother carry the family file. Kryptonopolis carries the urban file. The two cross on launch day, then never again: Earth has no Kryptonian suburb, only an ice refuge built later.
What the films show instead
The 1978 film opens on Krypton, not on a « Kryptonopolis » caption. You see the Council, Jor-El's science, the departure. Man of Steel does the same: a capital in crisis, not a city name repeated. The 2025 film, in the Gunn era, does not rebuild the city either: it sends a parental message from the ship.
So the name stays mostly a comics and encyclopedia word. The screen shows the planet, the family, the explosion. If you are looking for the city, you go back to the pages, not the credits.
The word can appear in a photonovel, a guidebook, a game. That is not a film appearance. For the silo, the screen carries the planet and the family; the comics carry the city. We do not force the name into a film that does not write it.
The name, from the Earth homonym to the capital
Three frequent mix-ups
- It is Kandor under another name. No. Kandor is stolen and shrunk. Kryptonopolis becomes capital after that theft, then dies with the planet.
- It is Argo City, Supergirl's city. No. Argo City is Kara's fragment. Kal-El is born in the house of Jor-El and Lara.
- Action Comics #246 shows the Kryptonian city. No. That issue renames an Earth estate. The indexed appearance of the city is Superman #159.

The planet is the frame file. This page is only the main street — and it ends on launch day.
