Who is Mister Terrific?

Mister Terrific is a name carried by two successive heroes of the DC universe. The first, Terry Sloane, belongs to the Golden Age of comics. The second, Michael Holt, is the one the general public knows today thanks to the film Superman by James Gunn, where he's played by Edi Gathegi.

What sets the character apart in a universe full of aliens and demigods is that he has no superpowers at all. His strength is his intelligence, presented in the comics as one of the greatest on the planet, and the technology he designs himself.

Three elements make him instantly recognizable:

• The T-shaped mask, which covers the upper part of his face
• The T-Spheres, flying spheres he controls remotely
• The motto "Fair Play", embroidered on his jacket

Terry Sloane: the first Mister Terrific (1942)

The name first appears in Sensation Comics #1, cover-dated January 1942 — the same issue that introduces Wonder Woman in her own regular series. Terry Sloane is presented there as a man who succeeded at everything too early: athlete, scientist, businessman, he's so bored he contemplates ending it all.

It's by saving a young woman that he finds meaning in his life and adopts the identity of Mister Terrific, with the motto "Fair Play" as his code of conduct. The character joins the Justice Society of America (JSA), the very first superhero team in comics history.

Terry Sloane remains a background hero for decades. His death in the comics, in the 1970s, leaves a void that nobody fills — until a writer has the idea of making that void the starting point for a new character.

Michael Holt: the 1997 rebirth

Michael Holt appears in The Spectre (vol. 3) #54, cover-dated June 1997, created by writer John Ostrander and artist Tom Mandrake. His origin is one of DC's darkest: when the reader meets him, he has just lost his wife Paula in a car accident and is considering taking his own life.

It's the Spectre, the spirit of divine vengeance, who talks him out of it by telling him the story of Terry Sloane. Holt understands that the disappearance of the first Mister Terrific left a void in the hero community, and decides to take up the name to carry on his mission: inspiring and helping young people in difficulty.

The echo between the two characters is intentional. Sloane and Holt are both brilliant men, saved from despair by the decision to be useful to others. The motto "Fair Play" passes from one to the other like an inheritance.

The T-Spheres and "Fair Play"

The T-Spheres are Michael Holt's signature invention: flying spheres equipped with artificial intelligence, which he commands through his mask and his earpieces. In the comics as in the film, they serve as tools, weapons and means of transport all at once.

Their most common functions:

• Analysis and scanning of the environment, hologram projection
• Attack, through electrical discharges or impacts
• Lift, by raising him or towing him through the air
• Communication and hacking of computer systems

Another distinctive feature from the comics: Holt is designed to be invisible to detection technologies, cameras and sensors included. That's what allows him to act where more powerful heroes would be spotted.

As for "Fair Play," it's not just a slogan. It sums up an ethic: winning without cheating, not crushing those weaker than yourself, and putting your intelligence at the service of others rather than your own glory — a stance that brings him close to the Man of Steel's moral code.

His journey in the comics

After his debut in The Spectre, Michael Holt joins the reformed JSA in the late 1990s, and becomes one of its pillars. He takes on growing responsibilities there, all the way to chairing the team — a rare position for a hero without powers, surrounded by characters far more powerful than he is.

His path then crosses several institutions of the DC universe:

• Checkmate, the intelligence organization, where he holds a leadership position

• The Terrifics, a team launched in 2018 that brings him together with Metamorpho, Plastic Man and Phantom Girl

That last point deserves noting: in the comics, Mister Terrific and Metamorpho were already teammates even before the 2025 film placed them in the same story.

On television, a version of the character renamed Curtis Holt appeared in the series Arrow, played by Echo Kellum. But it's the movies that made Michael Holt a name known to the general public.

Edi Gathegi in Superman (2025)

In James Gunn's film, Mister Terrific is played by Edi Gathegi, an actor who got noticed in the Twilight saga and in X-Men: First Class, where he played the mutant Darwin. That role had been very brief; Gathegi himself has spoken of this film as a second chance to play a superhero.

His character is first presented as a distant ally, a member of a Justice Gang more interested in its image than in the principles of the hero of Metropolis. The turning point comes when Superman disappears: it's Mister Terrific who agrees to help Lois Lane find him, where his teammates hesitate.

Three sequences left their mark on viewers:

• The infiltration with Lois, where the T-Spheres serve as both vessel and weapon
• The solo fight against Luthor's men, shot in a single take, which became one of the film's most shared scenes
• The dimensional rift that cuts Metropolis in two, which he helps close while pointing out the absurdity of creating a pocket universe

Gathegi plays the character with a slightly irritated composure — "a little grumpy," in his own words — that went over very well. In a film where David Corenswet plays a sincere and vulnerable Superman, Mister Terrific provides the counterpoint: cold intelligence, but put in the service of good. A series in the works?

The character's success immediately revived the question of a solo project. As early as summer 2025, James Gunn was publicly mentioning spin-off ideas around Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen, and Edi Gathegi said he was ready to reprise the role.

Since then, the project has taken shape. In July 2026, the trade press reported that a television series devoted to Mister Terrific was in development at DC Studios, with a pilot written by Allan Heinberg, a writer known for the series The Sandman and the film Wonder Woman. Edi Gathegi is set to reprise the role.

Caution is warranted about what this means: as we write, the series is in development, with no official order, no date and no confirmed platform, even if HBO Max is the logical destination for DC Studios projects. Nothing yet guarantees it will see the light of day.

On the other hand, the character is definitely expected in the film's sequel: Gathegi is set to reprise his role in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for 2027, which will once again bring together the hero and Lex Luthor — this time, according to early reports, in a forced alliance against Brainiac.

Conclusion

Mister Terrific is a rare case: a background character for more than eighty years, who becomes in a single film one of the most popular heroes of the DC universe. Without powers, without a cape, he makes his mark through intelligence, ethics and a good dose of irony.

His most unexpected teammate in the film also has his own feature: Metamorpho, the Element Man.

From Terry Sloane to Michael Holt, from the JSA to the Justice Gang, the through-line remains the same: "Fair Play." If the series in development comes to fruition, it will be the first time a human hero from the Man of Steel's circle gets his own show in the new DC universe.
