Sam Lane in 1959: a horse breeder in Pittsdale
Sam Lane enters Superman's story without a uniform. He first appears in Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #13, cover-dated November 1959. Written by Robert Bernstein and drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger, the story “Introducing... Lois Lane's Parents!” presents the reporter's parents.
In this version, Sam is nothing like a military man. With his wife Ella, he runs a horse farm in Pittsdale, Lois's small hometown. Pittsdale is said to be in Iowa, though that isn't certain. The couple has two daughters: Lois and her younger sister, Lucy.
This farmer belongs to Earth-One, the Silver Age continuity, and he lives there until Crisis on Infinite Earths, which closes the book on that Earth and the other parallel worlds of the DC Multiverse. So the 1959 Sam Lane isn't a general: the stars don't arrive until 1987, with a reinvented character.
The 1987 general: a father who wanted a son
After Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC restarts Superman's story from the beginning, and this reboot also reaches Lois's family. In Adventures of Superman #424, cover-dated January 1987, writer Marv Wolfman and artist Jerry Ordway turn Sam Lane into a US Army general. That's the military man several series will pick up later on.
This general has a difficult relationship with his daughters. He regrets never having had a son and raises Lois as a substitute son, while Lucy grows up in the same house. It offers one key to the character of Lois in the comics of that era: a daughter used to having to assert herself.
Sam Lane also disapproves of Clark Kent. So Lois and Clark's relationship moves forward under the gaze of a father who doesn't like the suitor. The reader, who knows who's hiding behind the reporter's glasses, feels the full irony: this distrust foreshadows the one the general will harbor against Superman.
Serving President Luthor, up to his 2001 sacrifice
When Lex Luthor becomes President of the United States in the comics, Sam Lane joins his administration as Secretary of Defense. So Lois's father works for Superman's longtime enemy, and Lois stands up to him before the war against Imperiex, in Superman vol. 2 #166 to #168.
That war is Our Worlds at War. In Action Comics #781, cover-dated September 2001, Joe Kelly and Kano give the general a hero's exit. In Washington, an Imperiex probe threatens the president. Sam Lane has Black Lightning overload the engine of his nuclear tank to destroy it, and he disappears in the explosion.
Here the character shows his contradiction. He isn't Superman's enemy the way Lex Luthor is: against Imperiex, he fights on the same side as the hero. But he serves Luthor, and that loyalty will weigh heavily when the comics bring him back, seven years later.
Why Sam Lane mistrusts Superman
The general's mistrust boils down to one idea: Superman is a power from somewhere else, and no army controls it. In Superman: Secret Origin, six issues by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank published from September 2009 to August 2010, General Lane is one of the antagonists. Allied with Luthor, he hunts Superman with Sergeant John Corben, the future Metallo.
The New 52 picks up that tension. In Action Comics vol. 2 #1, cover-dated November 2011, Grant Morrison and Rags Morales show a general who worries as Superman grows stronger. He pays Lex Luthor as a consultant to capture him.
Sam Lane has no powers. In the comics, he strikes at Superman through others: Luthor, Corben, Reactron, Superwoman, or kryptonite. He raises the question that Superman's powers force on every government: can you trust your safety to a being no ordinary weapon can stop? The general says no, his daughter says yes, and the character thrives on that gap.
Project 7734 and New Krypton: from mistrust to massacre
In late 2008, at the start of the New Krypton saga, the comics reveal that Sam Lane survived. In Superman: New Krypton Special #1, cover-dated December 2008, written by Geoff Johns, James Robinson, and Sterling Gates, he gets Luthor out of prison to enlist him against Superman and the Kryptonians of Kandor.
He then runs Project 7734, aimed at the Kryptonians, and brings his younger daughter into it: Lucy Lane receives a suit with mystical powers and becomes Superwoman. Supergirl unmasks her at the end of Supergirl vol. 5 #40, cover-dated June 2009, in the “Who Is Superwoman?” arc. So the 2009 Superwoman is Lucy, not Lois.
Everything changes in Superman: War of the Supermen #1, cover-dated July 2010, by James Robinson and Sterling Gates. Reactron, used as a living bomb, explodes and kills most of the roughly 100,000 Kryptonians, including Alura, Kara's mother. Luthor, still taking orders from Sam Lane, then turns the sun red to strip the survivors of their powers. In issue #4, facing Supergirl and Lois, the general still compares the Kryptonians to rabid dogs, then kills himself rather than be tried by an international court. At this point, it's no longer mistrust, but a massacre.
Sam Lane after 2011: senator and grandfather of Jon Kent
In the New 52, Sam Lane changes roles again: in Superman vol. 3 #26, cover-dated February 2014, he is chosen to replace the late Senator Hume in the Senate. When Lois reveals Superman's identity, he comes in person to arrest the hero, who escapes. This version dies in Event Leviathan #5, cover-dated December 2019, by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev: wounded in Leviathan's attack on A.R.G.U.S., he dies cut off from his life support.
In the comics, Sam Lane is also the grandfather of Jon Kent: Lois and Clark's son is named Jonathan Samuel Kent, after his two grandfathers, Jonathan Kent and Samuel Lane. Jon appears in Convergence: Superman #2, cover-dated July 2015, by Dan Jurgens. During the DC Rebirth era, in Action Comics #999, cover-dated May 2018, Sam reluctantly comes to the Kents' home to see Jon, still determined to prepare for a Superman who might turn against America.
Absolute Superman, by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval, has him appear in #4, released on February 5, 2025, as a former Lazarus Corp general whose legs were both amputated by Talia, alias Omega Prime. She kills him in #11, released on September 3, 2025, after he frees Lois and Jimmy.
Sam Lane on screen: a cameo, a doctor, a colonel
On the big screen, Lois's father makes only one appearance, in Superman, Richard Donner's film (1978). Kirk Alyn, the Superman of the 1948 and 1950 serials, plays him uncredited, with Noel Neill as Lois's mother, in the train scene where young Clark outruns the locomotive. Their dialogue varies from one cut of the film to another. For the Lois played by Margot Kidder, the father amounts to this cameo.
Lois & Clark (titled Loïs et Clark in France) makes him a sports doctor, a specialist in cybernetic implants, divorced from Ellen. Denis Arndt plays him in “Requiem for a Superhero” (1x05), which aired on October 17, 1993, in the United States, then Harve Presnell takes over.
Superman: The Animated Series (titled Superman, l'Ange de Metropolis in France) makes him a military man, but without the stars: in “Monkey Fun” (2x13), which aired on September 27, 1997, in the United States, Dean Jones voices a US Air Force colonel who brings the old toy that can calm Titano, the monkey turned giant.
| Title | Played by | His role |
|---|---|---|
| Superman (film, 1978) | Kirk Alyn, uncredited | Lois's father, for one scene |
| Lois & Clark (1993) | Denis Arndt, then Harve Presnell | doctor, divorced from Ellen |
| Superman: The Animated Series (1997) | Dean Jones (voice) | US Air Force colonel |
| Smallville (2004 and 2010) | Michael Ironside | four-star general in 2010 |
| Supergirl (2015) | Glenn Morshower | general hostile to aliens |
| Superman & Lois (2021-2024) | Dylan Walsh | allied general who knows Clark's secret |
| My Adventures with Superman (2023) | Joel de la Fuente (voice) | general tied to Task Force X |
Three wary generals: Smallville, Supergirl, and My Adventures with Superman
In Smallville, Lois's father finally wears the stars. Michael Ironside plays General Sam Lane in “Gone” and “Facade” (4x02 and 4x03), which aired on September 29 and October 6, 2004, in the United States, then in “Ambush” (10x07), which aired on November 5, 2010, in the United States. He spends Thanksgiving at the Kent farm, backs the Vigilante Registration Act, and puts Clark through tests. His daughter Lois calls him a four-star general.
Supergirl takes a harder line starting with season 1, which aired on CBS in the United States. Glenn Morshower plays a general hostile to aliens, who sees even Superman as a threat. In “Red Faced” (1x06), which aired on November 30, 2015, he pits Supergirl against the robot Red Tornado.
The animated series My Adventures with Superman, launched on Adult Swim on July 7, 2023, in the United States, gives the general's voice to Joel de la Fuente and ties him to Task Force X. In season 1, he's about to kill Superman, then backs down when Lois pleads for his life, before helping the hero against Brainiac in season 2.
Superman & Lois: Sam Lane, the father-in-law who knows the secret
Dylan Walsh, whose casting the TVLine site announced on April 2, 2020, plays General Sam Lane in Superman & Lois (titled Superman et Loïs in France), where he leads the Department of Defense. The series ran on The CW from February 23, 2021, to December 2, 2024, in the United States. Walsh takes over the role from Morshower, but the series has its own continuity, separate from Supergirl: this isn't the same Sam Lane.
This general knows Clark's secret identity and works with Superman, whom he calls with a transmitter. Caution remains: in “Heritage” (1x02), John Henry Irons hands him a plate marked 7734, which reads “HELL” upside down. Sam then sets up his own Project 7734, a kryptonite arsenal set aside in case Superman ever turns against Earth, then dismantles it: a precaution he regrets, unrelated to the war in the comics.
In “Always My Hero” (4x03, titled “À jamais mon héros” in the French version), which aired on October 14, 2024, in the United States, he is shot, then killed by Doomsday on Luthor's orders. He gives his heart, which John Henry Irons and Lara's AI transplant to bring Superman back to life. In this version, mistrust is only a starting point: Sam Lane ends up an ally.
FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Conclusion
Sam Lane changes jobs with almost every version: a horse breeder in 1959, a general from 1987 on, and a senator in 2014 in the comics, a doctor in Lois & Clark, a colonel in one episode of the animated series aired in 1997. One thing never changes: he's still Lois's father.
Depending on the version, his relationship with Superman ranges from the New Krypton massacre, in the comics, to the sacrifice in Superman & Lois, on TV. To follow his daughter, check out Lois Lane; for his grandson, Jon Kent.
