Earth-2 DC: the Justice Society of America, Kal-L and the New 52 version

Superman Comics
DC Comics multiverse New 52 ⏱ 11 min read

All about Earth-2 DC, the universe that houses the Justice Society of America and Kal-L. You see where the concept comes from (Flash #123, 1961), when the name appears (1963), what happens to that world in the two Crisis events, then — separately — New 52 Earth 2, where Kal-El falls early and Val-Zod takes the cape.

Earth-2 begins before its name, in 1961

The Flash #123, “Flash of Two Worlds!”, September 1961 cover: Gardner Fox, Carmine Infantino, inks by Joe Giella, Julius Schwartz. Barry Allen vibrates to Keystone City and finds Jay Garrick. The story founds the DC multiverse. The name “Earth-Two” is not in it. It arrives in Justice League of America #21, “Crisis on Earth-One!”, August 1963. Earth-2 DC, in the title, therefore first names a 1961 concept, baptized two years later.

What it is for, in short: to house the Golden Age heroes on a parallel Earth, distinct from Earth-1 (League, Silver Age). The multiverse has its page. Superman's eras too. Here we stay on that world, not on Calvin Ellis or the Syndicate.

Earth-2, dates kept

1961Flash #123: two worlds, not yet the name
1963JLA #21: “Earth-Two”

2005Infinite Crisis: Kal-L returns, then dies
2012Earth 2 #1 (New 52), Robinson and Scott

The Justice Society of America, and Kal-L in brief

The Justice Society of America first meets in All-Star Comics #3, winter 1940 cover, on sale November 22, 1940. Superman and Batman are honorary members there: too busy for the meetings. We see them in All-Star Comics #7 (October-November 1941, a collection for war orphans) and #36 (August-September 1947). Hawkman is in the first batch. The JSA is not the League.

Kal-L is this Earth's Superman, attached after the fact. He writes at the Daily Star, under George Taylor, not Perry White. He marries his Lois in Action Comics #484 (1978). Power Girl is his cousin Kara Zor-L. Kal-El is the other name, the other Earth. We do not tell Kal-L's life: his end is in Infinite Crisis.

Crisis 1985, Infinite Crisis 2005: what remains of Earth-2

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) merges and destroys the parallel Earths. Earth-2 ceases to exist as an everyday world. Kal-L survives in a “paradise dimension” with his Lois, Superboy-Prime and Alexander Luthor Jr. It is no longer a city you live in: it is off-screen.

Infinite Crisis (2005-2006) brings him back. Kal-L dies facing Superboy-Prime; the consensus places that at #7, June 2006. We do not retell the event. We keep only the fate of this universe and of its Superman. After 1986, you no longer “live” on Earth-2 the way people lived there in 1963.

New 52 Earth 2: another Earth-2, in 2012

DC relaunches Earth 2 (no hyphen in the US title) on May 2, 2012. James Robinson writes, Nicola Scott draws. It is the second wave of the New 52, not a sequel to Fox's Earth-Two. The “Wonders of the World” replace the classic JSA. In #1, Batman, Wonder Woman and the local Superman — a Kal-El of this Earth, not Kal-L — fall to Apokolips and Steppenwolf.

Robinson leaves after #16. Tom Taylor takes over at #17. A double in Apokolips's service appears later (sources hesitate between clone and wiped original): we say “a double”, we do not decide. This is not the Earth-2 of 1961. It is not Rebirth either.

Val-Zod takes the cape, Earth 2 #19 and #25

Val-Zod appears in Earth 2 #19, March 2014, created by Tom Taylor, Nicola Scott and Robson Rocha. He accepts the role of Superman in Earth 2 #25, on sale July 2, 2014. He is not Kal-L. He is not the Kal-El of #1. He is another Kryptonian of this Earth, later, more reluctant. The series then continues in Earth 2: World's End (weekly, 2014-2015), Convergence, then Earth 2: Society.

The planet is destroyed. Survivors colonize another world. We do not make a novel of it. We keep the 2014 date for the cape, and leave Kal-L to Infinite Crisis. If you open a New 52 issue looking for the Daily Star, you have the wrong decade.

Earth-2 is neither Earth-3 nor The Flash's Earth-2

Earth-3 is the Crime Syndicate, Ultraman, Owlman. Earth-23 is Calvin Ellis. Earth-2 is the Golden Age then, separately, Robinson's New 52. Pasting them together reverses the camps. The Syndicate has no honorary JSA, no Daily Star, no Val-Zod.

The Arrowverse has an “Earth-2” (Zoom, Harry Wells) that is not Fox's. Stargirl and Smallville “Absolute Justice” touch the JSA without being Earth-2. We do not merge them. The name travels from one medium to another. The 1961 world remains a paper universe, with a Crisis to close it and a 2012 relaunch that is not its sequel.

The JLA / JSA crossovers, from 1963

From JLA #21, the two teams meet every year. The two Supermen cross paths. This is not a shared graphic novel to retell here: it is why Earth-2 stays useful after 1961. Without those issues, Kal-L would remain a 1938 memory. With them, he has a world, a paper, a wife, a cousin.

Earth-1's League is not the subject. Earth-2's JSA is. When Crisis 1985 closes the world, those yearly meetings stop. When Infinite Crisis reopens Kal-L, it is no longer for an annual meeting: it is for a war. Two uses, two decades.

In the shop: Crisis as a figure, not an Earth-2 map

No product in the shop writes “Earth-Two” on the box. The closest objects carry Crisis on Infinite Earths or a comics panel: we are on the side of the event that closes the world, not of a Daily Star map. The accompanying lines say so. We are not selling you Kal-L as a named portrait.

If you want Kal-L, Infinite Crisis is already online. If you want Clark's New 52, too. Earth-2 DC fits a 1961 concept, a 1963 name, a JSA, a Crisis, and a 2012 relaunch that is no longer the same world.
