Zatanna is born in Hawkman #4, in 1964
Zatanna Zatara first appears in Hawkman #4, the story “The Girl Who Split in Two!”. The Grand Comics Database dates the cover October-November 1964 and the on-sale day to August 20, 1964. Gardner Fox writes, Murphy Anderson pencils and inks, Julius Schwartz edits. Hawkman and Hawkgirl each find a paralyzed young woman in a stage-magician costume, speaking the wrong way round. Once reunited, the two halves form Zatanna. She is looking for her father.
That father, Giovanni Zatara — also called John in some versions — is already in Action Comics #1, June 1938 cover, the same issue as Superman. Zatanna is not Zatara. She is not Zachary Zatara either, a later cousin. The stage costume (top hat, tails, bare legs) comes from that opening story. The super-hero costume arrives later.

Speaking backward: how Zatanna casts a spell
“The one who speaks backward” describes her preferred method: she reverses the words out loud. She can also write the spell, or sign it, when she cannot speak. In a weakened state, several stories leave her only the four elements — earth, air, water, fire. So it is not the only way to do magic, and it is not a stage gag: it is the grammar of her spells.
In Hawkman #4, the two halves “speak the wrong way” before they are reunited. Fox then picks up the quest for Zatara across several titles — Batman, Atom, Green Lantern, Elongated Man — and closes it in Justice League of America. Superman has no named duel with her there: she crosses the League where he already sits. We do not invent a head-to-head that lacks two sources.
Zatanna enters the League in December 1978
She is voted a member in Justice League of America #161, “The Reverse-Spells of Zatanna's Magic”, December 1978 cover. Until then she was only a guest. The League already has Superman. Martian Manhunter and John Stewart have their pages: we do not go back over them. Zatanna brings magic, not leadership.
Later she goes through Justice League Dark (2011), a solo series in 2010, and a childhood tie to Bruce Wayne in Detective Comics #833 (August 2007). Those are other titles. Here we keep 1978 as the entry date, and leave Constantine, the Enchantress and the New 52 to their own stories. Superman 2025 does not show her. The Reeve films neither.
Smallville, “Hex”: Serinda Swan, not yet the ally
TV Guide announces the casting on January 21, 2009. Serinda Swan plays Zatanna in “Hex” (season 8, episode 17), aired in the United States on March 26, 2009, written by Bryan Q. Miller, directed by Mairzee Almas. Wikipedia for season 8 lists 3.80 million viewers. Chloe, on her birthday evening, wishes to swap her life with Lois's. Clark accidentally loses the memory of his powers. Zatanna wants to resurrect Zatara at the cost of her life. Clark talks her into honoring her father's memory rather than sacrificing herself.
In that episode she first complicates Clark's life. “Clark's ally on Smallville” does not hold yet: she is the magician whose wishes scramble Chloe and Tom Welling. She faces neither Zod nor Darkseid. She is not a member of the comics League. The season-by-season guide places “Hex” in the eighth year, not as a recurring arc.
“Warrior”: Zatanna becomes Clark's ally
“Warrior” (season 9, episode 12) airs in the United States on February 12, 2010. Zatanna works with Clark to recover a cursed comic of her father's. She tries a spell to kiss him. Clark breaks the spell. From this episode the word “ally” holds: she helps, she courts, she is no longer only the source of the disorder. Smallville treats her as a guest, not as a billed regular.
She is not Black Canary, nor Green Arrow: those two have their own arcs in the series. Zatanna stays at three appearances. We do not say “the last three seasons” as if she were recurring. Three episodes, one of them a cameo.
“Icarus”: a cameo at Hawkman's funeral
“Icarus” (season 10, episode 11) airs in the United States on December 10, 2010. Zatanna appears at the funeral of Carter Hall / Hawkman, in Egypt. The Smallville wiki says she is uncredited, with no close-up: the face is not necessarily Swan's. So we write “a cameo at the funeral”, without asserting a close-up of the actress. Wikipedia's Serinda Swan page still lists the three episodes.
Clark has no new magic scene with her there. The series ends the following year. Zatanna becomes neither a member of the televised Justice League nor Metropolis's magician. If you want Clark's actor, his page exists. If you want Hawkman, too. Here we close the Smallville stretch: Hex first, Warrior next, Icarus in silence.
What Zatanna is not, outside Smallville
She is not Giovanni Zatara. She is not Amalgam's White Witch. She appears in no Reeve film, nor in James Gunn's 2025 film. In animation, Julie Brown and Jennifer Hale voice her in the DCAU, Lacey Chabert in Young Justice: those are other versions, in one sentence. We do not mix those voices with Swan.
In the comics, her tie to Superman runs through the League, not through a shared graphic novel told here. Kal-El has his name page. Clark, on Smallville, is not yet the public Superman. Zatanna speaks backward in both media. She does not have the same timetable.
In the shop: Smallville, not a portrait of Swan
No product in the shop shows Serinda Swan or Zatanna's hat. The closest items carry the Smallville logo or a Justice League T-shirt: we stay with the series where she appears three times, not of a magician figure. The accompanying lines say so. We are not selling you Zatanna in a stage costume.
If you want Clark on screen, the Welling and season-by-season pages are already there. If you want the League, too. Zatanna holds in a 1964 issue, a 1978 election, and three episodes. The rest is elsewhere.

Conclusion
Zatanna has spoken backward since Hawkman #4. Fox and Anderson split her in two, then Fox takes her to the League in 1978. On Smallville, Swan plays her three times: first a problem, then an ally, finally a silence at a funeral.
If you want Hawkman, Action Comics #1, the League or Clark on screen, those pages exist. Here we stop at the magician, and leave Zatara to 1938.
