What Order Should You Watch the Superman Movies? The Complete Guide
Share
What order should you watch the Superman movies? The question is real, because the filmography is not one continuous saga: these are four separate universes that do not follow each other and that contradict each other. In this article you'll find: the complete list by release date, the breakdown by universe, the recommended order for your profile, the films you can skip without missing anything, where the animated films fit, and the upcoming-release calendar. By the end, you'll know exactly where to start.
The essentials
- Number of universes: four, with no continuity between them
- The classic starting point: Superman (1978), still the best first film
- The modern starting point: Superman (2025), no prior knowledge required
- Must-watch films: 1978, 1980, Man of Steel, 2025
- Optional films: Superman III, Superman IV
- Coming next: Man of Tomorrow, slated for July 2027

The complete list by release date
First possible answer: chronological release order. It's the simplest, and it's the one our list of Superman movies.
| Year | Film | Universe |
|---|---|---|
| 1978 | Superman | Reeve era |
| 1980 | Superman II | Reeve era |
| 1983 | Superman III | Reeve era |
| 1984 | Supergirl | Reeve era (spin-off) |
| 1987 | Superman IV | Reeve era |
| 2006 | Superman Returns | alternate sequel |
| 2006 | Superman II : Donner Cut | home-video cut |
| 2013 | Man of Steel | DCEU |
| 2016 | Batman v Superman | DCEU |
| 2017 | Justice League | DCEU |
| 2021 | Zack Snyder’s Justice League | DCEU (cut) |
| 2025 | Superman | DCU |
| 2026 | Supergirl | DCU |
This list is enough for a curious cinephile, but it has a flaw: it mixes films that have nothing to do with each other. Watching Superman IV then Man of Steel makes no narrative sense.
Hence the second, more useful approach: follow the universes.
Four universes that do not follow each other
1. The Reeve era (1978-1987). Four films with Christopher Reeve, plus a spin-off about his cousin. It's the only real continuous saga in the filmography: the four films follow one another, with the same actors.
2. Superman Returns (2006). Bryan Singer's film is an alternate sequel: it picks up after Superman II and simply ignores the third and fourth entries. Our analysis of Superman Returns breaks down that choice.
3. The DCEU (2013-2021). Zack Snyder's universe, with Henry Cavill. Three main films, plus an alternate cut. No link to the previous ones.
4. The DCU (since 2025). James Gunn's new universe, with David Corenswet. Here too, everything starts over: our feature on James Gunn's Superman explains this reset.
If you've never seen anything
Start with Superman (2025). That's the most useful advice in this article, for three reasons.
First, the film asks for no prior knowledge: it opens on a Superman already at work and explains what you need in a few minutes. Next, this is the universe that continues: the upcoming films will attach to it. Finally, its colorful tone will age well as a first contact.
Then continue with Superman (1978), still the absolute reference, then Superman II. You'll then have seen the essentials of the character on screen in three films.
Our analysis ofSuperman 2025 review breaks down what James Gunn's film is worth, and our feature on Superman (1978) explains why the first one hasn't aged.
If you want the classic version
The Reeve-era order
The Donner Cut needs a clarification: it is not a fifth film, but another version of the second, released on video. Watching it right after Superman II lets you compare two takes on the same story.
As for Supergirl (1984), it sits in the same universe but without Christopher Reeve, who refused to appear. You can watch it at any point.
To understand what sent this saga off the rails after two successful films, our analysis of Superman III and the one on Superman IV tell the fall.
If you start with the DCU
The new universe is still short, which makes it easy to follow. It opens with Superman in July 2025, continues with Supergirl in June 2026, and will continue with Man of Tomorrow, slated for July 2027.
If you want everything, you have to add the series: the animated series Creature Commandos opens the universe in late 2024, and Peacemaker season 2 attaches to it. But to follow Superman, the films are enough.
Zack Snyder's DCEU, meanwhile, is watched on its own: Man of Steel, then Batman v Superman, then the Snyder Cut rather than the theatrical version of Justice League, widely seen as shaky by a large part of the audience.
These two universes do not talk to each other. Watching them in the order you prefer has no consequence.
What you can skip
Three optional films
- Superman III (1983). The film swings into comedy and puts Richard Pryor front and center; Lois Lane appears for only a few minutes. You can skip it without losing anything about the character.
- Superman IV (1987). Cut budget, dated effects, amputated edit: it's the least well received film in the saga. Save it for the curious.
- Justice League (2017). The theatrical version was reshot after Zack Snyder left. The 2021 cut tells the same story, better.
Conversely, two films are often unfairly underrated. Superman Returns split audiences on release but has gained defenders, and Supergirl (1984) is better than its reputation in the long cut.
Our ranking of Superman movies box office puts those judgments in perspective: commercial success and perceived quality do not always overlap.
What about the animated films?
They form a continent of their own, often better than the live-action films. None is needed to understand the others: each adapts a specific story.
Three ways in. The Death of Superman for the most famous event in the comics; Superman/Batman : Apocalypse for Supergirl's arrival; and Justice League Dark : Apokolips War for the darkest version of the character.
For families, DC League of Super-Pets remains the best entry for the youngest, with a fully comic tone.
These films are watched on their own, in the order you want.
What comes next
The DCU calendar is now public. Supergirl came out on June 26, 2026, with Milly Alcock in the title role: our feature on Supergirl (2026) takes stock. Clayface follows in October 2026, outside the Superman circle.
The direct sequel is called Man of Tomorrow and is slated for July 9, 2027. Our article on Man of Tomorrow separates what DC Studios has confirmed from what is still rumor.
Other projects are announced without a date, including a Wonder Woman film. The pace James Gunn has announced stays cautious: a film only launches when the script allows it.
Keep three films and you'll have the essentials: Superman (1978) for the foundation, Man of Steel (2013) for the modern, dark version, and Superman (2025) for the universe underway. Everything else is extra.
FAQ — Frequently asked questions
What order should you watch the Superman movies?
The simplest path is to follow the universes, not the dates. Start with Superman (2025) if you're new, or with Superman (1978) then Superman II for the classic version. The DCEU is watched on its own: Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, then the Snyder Cut.
Do the Superman movies follow each other?
Only inside each universe. The Reeve era forms a four-film saga; Superman Returns is an alternate sequel that ignores the last two; the DCEU and the DCU each start from zero.
Do you need to have seen the older films before Superman 2025?
No. James Gunn's film asks for no prior knowledge: it starts with a Superman already at work and introduces its universe in a few minutes.
Which films can you skip?
Superman III and Superman IV without hesitation, and the theatrical Justice League in favor of the 2021 cut.
Where does Supergirl sit in all this?
The 1984 film belongs to the Reeve era, without Christopher Reeve on screen. The 2026 one, with Milly Alcock, belongs to the DCU and is watched after Superman (2025).
What is the next Superman film?
Man of Tomorrow, announced by DC Studios for July 9, 2027, with David Corenswet.
Conclusion
What order should you watch the Superman movies? The right answer depends on what you're looking for. To enter today's universe, start with 2025. To understand why this character matters, start with 1978. To see everything, follow the universes one by one rather than the dates.
Two articles complete this path: the Donner Cut for the alternate version of Superman II, and DC League of Super-Pets for the family animation.
What to avoid is strict release order: it chains films that do not talk to each other and makes the saga look incoherent, when these are four distinct attempts to tell the same myth.
