Adam Rayner as Morgan Edge, Tal-Rho from Superman & Lois, dark suit under an orange sky

Tal-Rho: Superman's Kryptonian half-brother in Superman & Lois

Superman TV Series
Series Krypton Enemy ⏱ 9 min read

Tal-Rho is Clark's Kryptonian half-brother in Superman & Lois, son of Lara and of Zeta-Rho, played by Adam Rayner under the name Morgan Edge. He is not the comics magnate. In this article you find who created him for the series, what he wants, how the Eradicator comes into play, and why the Edge namesake tangled everything. By the end you will know which file to open, comics or CW.

Key Facts

  • Role: Maternal half-brother of Kal-El, antagonist of seasons 1-2
  • Parents: Lara Lor-Van and Zeta-Rho (conceived by matrix)
  • Played by: Adam Rayner (adult); Jack Rehbein as a child, Ben Cockell at 19
  • Cover: Morgan Edge, CEO of Edge EnerCorp
  • Series: Superman & Lois, season 1 as a lead, season 2 as a guest
  • Creation: Original to the series — not a brother from the comics

A brother the comics did not have

Superman & Lois starts on 23 February 2021 on The CW. Adam Rayner first plays a magnate. Episode 9, « Loyal Subjekts », reveals him as Kryptonian and as a « brother ». Episode 10, « O Mother, Where Art Thou? », gives the name: Tal-Rho, son of Lara and of Zeta-Rho. GameRevolution says it plainly: that brother does not exist in the comics. The relative of the same age, in the paper canon, is Kara.

Todd Helbing only told Rayner once the actor was in Vancouver. DC.com published it in January 2022, when Tal-Rho came back. We do not invent an Action Comics first appearance for him.

Jack Rehbein plays the child. Ben Cockell, at 19, appears in the memories. The adult is Rayner, first in the CEO costume, then with a Kryptonian face. Three ages, one single name. We do not merge that with a paper brother: there is none.

Why he is called Morgan Edge

Morgan Edge is, in Kirby, a magnate who runs Intergang. The series borrows the name and nothing of the rest: no Intergang, no Daily Planet of the 70's, no Bruno Mannheim as a subordinate. Edge EnerCorp wants a Smallville mine and the X-kryptonite. Lois distrusts him at once.

That is precisely why the Edge article exists: to stop the two from being fused. Here we hold the other end. If you type « Morgan Edge Superman & Lois », you land on a Kryptonian. If you type the magnate, you stay with Kirby.

X-kryptonite, Eradicator, Smallville

Tal-Rho wants to lodge Kryptonian consciousnesses in human bodies. The X-kryptonite makes the transfer possible. Leslie Larr is the subject who « holds ». The Eradicator, in the series, is first an object — an egg of consciousnesses — then fuses with Tal-Rho. The comics have another Eradicator, who became one of the replacements after the death of the Man of Steel. We do not fuse them.

John Henry Irons comes from an Earth where a similar army ravaged Metropolis. Tyler Hoechlin stands against it with him. This is not Zod: no Phantom Zone, no army of Faora. A brother, a mine, a town.

The Smallville mine is not Krypton rebuilt. It is a hole in Kansas, an industrial pretext for a rite of possession. Leslie Larr « holds »; the other subjects less so. We do not turn that into a numbered army. The CW Eradicator is not the bald replacement of the 90's either: same word, two objects.

Lara, Zeta-Rho, the matrix

Before Jor-El, Lara was paired with Zeta-Rho. Tal is born by matrix; Clark is born naturally. ScreenRant sums episode 10 that way. Zeta-Rho, in the series, is the doctrinaire: bring Krypton back, even if it means emptying the humans. Tal-Rho also wants a brother. The two goals do not coincide for Clark.

Lara is therefore the hinge of the two files, mother and mother. Outside the series we do not credit her with a first son catalogued in the comics.

Season 2 and the inverted double

Season 1: defeat, DOD custody. Season 2: a powerless return in « The Ties That Bind » (DC.com, 18 January 2022), then an inverted Tal-Rho, on good terms with that world's Bizarro, married to his Lana. Ally Allston empties him. We stop at the published facts. The series ran four seasons; we do not invent a season 5.

The inverted double serves to show what Tal-Rho would have been without Zeta-Rho in command: a possible brother, not a doctrinaire. Ally Allston empties him as she empties the others. We do not draw a comics redemption from that, nor a hero title. It is a season 2 detour, then the character recedes.

Three common mix-ups

  • He is the Morgan Edge of the comics. No. In Kirby, Edge is human and runs Intergang. Here the name hides a Kryptonian original to the series.
  • Clark has always had a brother in the comics. No. Tal-Rho is a creation of Superman & Lois. The relative of the same age, on paper, is Kara.
  • He is Zod under another name. No. Zod comes from the Phantom Zone. Tal-Rho comes from a matrix and a Smallville mine.
To rememberTal-Rho is Clark's half-brother in Superman & Lois, played by Adam Rayner under the name Morgan Edge. A creation of the series. Kirby's magnate is another file.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Who is Tal-Rho?

Clark's Kryptonian half-brother in Superman & Lois, son of Lara and Zeta-Rho, played by Adam Rayner.

Does Tal-Rho exist in the comics?

Not under this identity as a brother. He is a creation of the series.

Why is he called Morgan Edge?

That is his Earth cover, CEO of Edge EnerCorp. The Morgan Edge of the comics is another character.

What is his plan?

To transfer Kryptonian consciousnesses into humans, via the X-kryptonite and the Eradicator, in order to « bring back » Krypton.

Is Tal-Rho in season 2?

Yes, as a guest. DC.com announced his return on 18 January 2022, episode The Ties That Bind.

Is Tal-Rho Zod?

No. Neither the Phantom Zone, nor Faora's army. A brother, not a general.

Conclusion

The Edge article already sets Tal-Rho aside in one sentence. Here we develop him. The two pages do not step on each other: one holds Kirby, the other holds the series.

The paper brother is Kara. The screen brother is this one. Lara is the only common point we can write without forcing it. The Edge name, for its part, is only a loan: you file it with Kirby, or you file it here, never both in the same sentence as if they were the same person. A borrowed name does not create a shared biography, nor a comics file.
