Who is Diane Lane, the DCEU's Martha Kent?
Diane Lane was born on January 22, 1965, in New York City. Her mother, Colleen Farrington, was a cabaret singer. Her father, Burt Lane, taught acting in Manhattan and drove a cab. She first went on stage at age 6, with La MaMa, an experimental theater company in New York. Her film debut came in A Little Romance (1979, released in France as I Love You, je t'aime), opposite Laurence Olivier: she was 14 when the film came out.
So when Warner Bros. picked her to play Martha Kent in 2011, she already had a career of more than thirty years behind her, plus an Oscar nomination for Unfaithful (2002). Here, we're talking about the actress and her four films. For the character herself, from the comics to the TV series, read our feature on Clark's adoptive parents instead. And to place her among all the actors in the Man of Steel's universe, remember one date: 2013.
Watch out for the last name: Diane Lane has no connection to Lois Lane, who is played by Amy Adams in the same four films.

Diane Lane as Martha Kent: the March 2011 casting
On March 2, 2011, Warner Bros. announced in a press release that Diane Lane would play Martha Kent in Zack Snyder's Superman. The film didn't have its final title yet: it would become Man of Steel. About a month earlier, the studio had chosen Henry Cavill to play Clark Kent and Superman. According to Wikipedia, Diane Lane was the first performer cast after him. On March 3, AlloCiné picked up the story and still only mentioned a possible role for Kevin Costner, who would go on to play Jonathan Kent.
Zack Snyder explained his choice in the press release. His opening sentence: “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman.” In other words, the role mattered to him because Martha is the woman whose values shaped Superman. He added that the actress knows how to convey the wisdom and the wonder of a mother whose son has powers beyond anything she could imagine.
The release, first planned for December 2012, slipped to June 2013. Diane Lane was 46 when the casting was announced and 48 at the US release. The role would stay with her for ten years, until 2021.
Man of Steel (2013): the mother in the closet and tornado scenes
Man of Steel opened in the United States on June 14, 2013, and in France on June 19. Directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, based on a story he wrote with Christopher Nolan, it is the first film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Alongside Diane Lane: Henry Cavill as Clark, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El and Michael Shannon in the role of General Zod.
The Kents raise Clark in Smallville, Kansas. The film tells the story of his childhood through flashbacks. Remember one scene above all, at school. Young Clark is overwhelmed by his powers: his X-ray vision shows him the inside of his classmates' bodies. He locks himself in a closet. On the other side of the door, Martha calms him down. She asks him to focus on the sound of her voice. In 2013, the critic for the University Daily Kansan singled out precisely that moment.
Jonathan then dies in a tornado, after refusing to let Clark use his powers to save him. Later, Zod comes looking for the Codex in Clark's pod. With his officers, he brutally interrogates Martha at the farm. Clark arrives, furious, and puts a stop to it. A production detail: part of the film was shot in Plano, Illinois, in August 2011.
Batman v Superman (2016): Martha taken hostage
Three years later, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened in France on March 23, 2016, and in the United States on March 25. It is the second DCEU film, again directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer. Ben Affleck plays Batman, Jesse Eisenberg plays Lex Luthor and Gal Gadot plays Wonder Woman. Kevin Costner, for his part, only makes a brief appearance as Jonathan.
Diane Lane gets two big moments in it. First, a conversation at the farm: Clark comes to ask his mother for advice. She tells him, in essence, that he doesn't owe this world a thing. On March 25, 2016, the actress told ABC7: “I think that she's reminding him he does have a choice.” In her view, Martha is reminding Clark that he has a choice, and that he isn't chained to his destiny.
Then comes the kidnapping. Lex Luthor has Martha abducted by Anatoli Knyazev, played by Callan Mulvey. He demands that Superman kill Batman in exchange for his mother's life. During the fight, Superman, down on the ground, begs Batman to save Martha. That is also the first name of Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha Wayne, played by Lauren Cohan. Batman stops, realizes he has been manipulated and goes to rescue Martha. After Superman's death, we see her again at Clark's funeral, in Smallville.
Justice League (2017): the farm lost, then returned
Justice League opened in France on November 15, 2017, and in the United States on November 17. It is the fifth DCEU film, and it runs two hours. Zack Snyder is the only credited director. But he stepped away in May 2017, after the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon then oversaw the end of post-production and shot additional scenes.
For Martha, the film opens in mourning. After Clark's death, she has to leave the farm because she can't pay back the bank. Sources differ on the exact term: Wikipedia talks about the farm being put up for sale, another article about a foreclosure. The key thing to remember: Martha loses the house where she raised her son.
When Superman is brought back to life, he reunites with Lois, then with his mother, at the farm in Smallville. The film's final gesture for the Kent family: Bruce Wayne buys the bank, which allows Martha to get her farm back. Diane Lane is credited as “Martha Kent” in the end credits, just as in the two previous films.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021): the fake Martha
On March 18, 2021, Zack Snyder's Justice League was released on HBO Max in the United States. In France, it arrived on video on demand the same month. It is the director's version of the 2017 film, partly reshot and re-edited. It runs 242 minutes (4:02) and uses none of the scenes shot by Joss Whedon. It was never released in theaters, apart from one-off IMAX screenings: in black and white (Justice Is Gray) in 2022, then in color in 2023. Diane Lane was 56.
In this version, the Martha scene everyone talks about is a trap. Lois, crushed by grief, receives a visit from Martha, who urges her to get on with her life. As she leaves the apartment, “Martha” changes appearance: it is General Calvin Swanwick, played by Harry Lennix. In other words J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter, disguised as Clark's mother. The character appears only twice in the film: in Martha's guise, then at the end, at Bruce Wayne's place.
Yet it really is Diane Lane we see in the conversation. According to TheWrap, the exchange between Martha and Lois comes from the original shoot; the part where the Martian Manhunter reveals himself was filmed in 2020, for this version. That twist doesn't exist in the 2017 film, where the character is absent. The real Martha, meanwhile, reunites with Clark, back from the dead, at the farm, with Lois.
Diane Lane as Martha Kent: four films, but how do you count them?
The title of this article promises four films. That's accurate, on one condition: knowing what you're counting. Diane Lane plays Martha Kent in three films released in theaters between 2013 and 2017, then in Zack Snyder's version of Justice League, in 2021. Her Wikipedia page and her AlloCiné biography list exactly those four titles. Wikipedia's list of DCEU films gives Zack Snyder's Justice League a line of its own. AlloCiné classifies it as a feature film, with its own page.
Yet there are only three stories: the 2021 version retells the 2017 plot. In its table of DCEU characters, Wikipedia actually places both Justice League films in the same column. By that rule, you would count three films.
What doesn't count: the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman, an extended cut running 31 minutes longer, released on home video in 2016; the black-and-white edition Justice Is Gray (2021), which AlloCiné's filmography nonetheless lists separately; and The Flash (2023), in which she doesn't appear. Nor is she in Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman or Aquaman. To place these titles in time, use the complete list of the Man of Steel's films or our viewing order guide.
| Film | Year | Release | Place in the DCEU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Man of Steel | 2013 | In theaters | 1st film |
| Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice | 2016 | In theaters | 2nd film |
| Justice League | 2017 | In theaters | 5th film |
| Zack Snyder's Justice League | 2021 | Streaming and video on demand | Zack Snyder's version of the 5th film |
How critics saw her Martha, and the “Martha” scene
None of the four films earned Diane Lane an award or a nomination: her list of accolades mentions none for Martha Kent. In the reviews we consulted, she is rarely mentioned. In June 2013, in Variety, Scott Foundas called Kevin Costner “touching” and mentioned Diane Lane without a single adjective. The University Daily Kansan, for its part, singled out the closet scene.
The moment that made the most noise is the “Martha” scene in Batman v Superman. French Wikipedia points out that it was mocked online and in many reviews. In 2018, the site Nerdist saw it as a big plot hole. In 2019, Zack Snyder defended it, describing it as a mythological construction. Other analyses, cited by Wikipedia, read it as the moment Batman finally sees Superman's humanity: Mark Hughes in Forbes, Richard Newby in The Hollywood Reporter. Keep in mind that these criticisms target the writing of the scene, not Diane Lane's performance.
On Rotten Tomatoes (checked on October 11, 2026), Man of Steel scores 57% positive reviews, Batman v Superman 28%, Justice League 39% and Zack Snyder's Justice League 71%. These scores rate the films, not the actress. In the French dub, according to Wikipedia, Martha is voiced by Hélène Chanson in all four films, rather than by Martine Irzenski, who usually dubs Diane Lane.
Before and after her: the other Martha Kents
Diane Lane is neither the first nor the last live-action Martha Kent. On the big screen, Phyllis Thaxter played the role in the 1978 Superman, then Eva Marie Saint in Superman Returns, in 2006. Diane Lane took over in 2013. After her, Neva Howell played Martha in James Gunn's Superman, in 2025: you'll find her in the cast of the 2025 film.
On television, K Callan played Martha in Lois & Clark. Annette O'Toole brought her to life in Smallville, starting in 2001. Michele Scarabelli took over the role in the series Superman & Lois, in 2021.
Across her three stories, Diane Lane's Martha loses her husband, then her son, then her farm, before getting Clark and the family home back. She is a mother we mostly see in hard times: she comforts, she advises, she serves as a hostage.
Hollywoodland, Let Him Go and the rest of her career
Diane Lane had already crossed paths with the Superman story before Man of Steel. In Allen Coulter's Hollywoodland (2006), she plays Toni Mannix. The film looks back at the death of George Reeves, the star of the Adventures of Superman series. Toni is the wife of Eddie Mannix, MGM's general manager, played by Bob Hoskins, and the mistress of Reeves, played by Ben Affleck. An echo we're pointing out ourselves: ten years later, Ben Affleck became the Batman who rescues her Martha.
Another echo, without Superman this time: in 2020, she reunited with Kevin Costner in Thomas Bezucha's Let Him Go (released in France as L'Un des nôtres). They play Margaret and George Blackledge, a retired sheriff and his wife, who try to get their grandson back. ABC7 presented the film as a reunion, pointing out that their chemistry was born in Man of Steel.
The rest of her career is vast. She made four films with Francis Ford Coppola: The Outsiders and Rumble Fish in 1983, The Cotton Club (1984), then Jack (1996). Adrian Lyne's Unfaithful (2002), opposite Richard Gere, earned her an Oscar nomination; the statuette went to Nicole Kidman for The Hours. The New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics honored her for that role. Then came Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), the voice of Riley's mother in Inside Out (2015) and Inside Out 2 (2024), the final season of House of Cards (2018) and Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (2024), her third Emmy nomination.

Four films to her name, three of them released in theaters, for three stories: the mother who calms a child locked in a closet, Lex Luthor's hostage, then the woman who loses her farm and gets her son back.
