The Engineer (Angela Spica): the Superman 2025 villain, from comics to film

DCU The Authority Villain ⏱ 9 min read

The Engineer, whose real name is Angela Spica, is the nanotech villain of the 2025 film, played by María Gabriela de Faría. In the comics she is not a sidekick of Lex Luthor: she is a heroine of The Authority, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. In this article you will find who she is on the page, what the liquid blood changes, why the film flips her side, and what the DCU can still do with her. By the end you will no longer confuse her with Eve Teschmacher, or with a LexCorp robot.

Key Facts

  • Real name: Angela Spica (sometimes Dr. Angela Spica)
  • Alias: The Engineer — the second to bear that name
  • Creators: Warren Ellis (script) and Bryan Hitch (art)
  • First appearance: The Authority #1, May 1999
  • Powers (comics): Blood replaced by liquid nanotechnology
  • 2025 film: María Gabriela de Faría, alongside Lex Luthor
  • Major gap: Heroine of The Authority in the comic, enemy in the film

Who is Angela Spica in The Authority

Angela Spica appears in The Authority #1, dated May 1999. Ellis and Hitch present her from the start as “the Maker”: a scientist who chose to rebuild herself. She grows up in Queens, daughter of a bus driver and a mother who works in a laundry — the detail comes from Jenny Sparks — The Secret History of the Authority.

She is not the first Engineer. The first, a scientist with no public name, had already injected himself with nanotech. He dies when Henry Bendix has his base struck (in Stormwatch #50, 1997). Angela, who knew him under his civilian identity, receives his notes. She mixes them with her own research on human-machine fusion, and replaces her blood with liquid nanotechnology.

Jenny Sparks recruits her into The Authority, the WildStorm team that “finishes the job” without asking governments for permission. Apollo, Midnighter, Swift, Jack Hawksmoor, The Doctor: Angela is not the leader, she is the one who builds what the group needs. Later, DC absorbs WildStorm; The Authority ends up in the same universe as the Man of Steel, including series where the team operates from the Fortress.

What nanotech blood changes

Official DC profiles list: shapeshifting, control of machines, flight, force fields, weapons built on the fly. The comic rule is simple: if it is technologically possible, Angela can probably do it. In The Authority #2, the liquid metal covers her skin, but she can return to a human appearance.

This is not Kryptonian magic, nor a ring, nor a totem. It is a body-workshop. Hence the clash with Kal-El: he draws power from the yellow sun, she draws it from an irreversible scientific choice. The 2025 film keeps that idea — a body that sculpts itself — and uses it against him, not at his side.

Do not invent: the exact material of the movie costume, the weight of the nanites, a “machine-body percentage”. The comics speak of replaced blood. The film shows a metallic silhouette. The rest is marketing, not canon.

The reversal in the 2025 film

On 15 November 2023, Deadline announces María Gabriela de Faría in James Gunn’s Superman, then still titled Legacy. The Venezuelan actress, known from Yo Soy Franky and Deadly Class, plays Angela Spica as an enemy. The film opens on 11 July 2025. In the cast, she is not a cameo: she is Luthor’s operator facing David Corenswet.

The gap with the comic is the point. In 1999, Angela joins The Authority to make the world better, in her brutal way. In 2025, she works for Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. DC said it plainly after release: the film version is not the silver heroine of the Ellis/Hitch pages. It is a DCU reading, not a panel-by-panel adaptation.

What the film is worth is also decided here: a villain little known to the general public, chosen instead of a Zod or a Brainiac already seen. The bet is that the name “Engineer” becomes readable without having read The Authority.

Engineer, Luthor and Eve

In the film, Luthor has two very different female lieutenants. Eve Teschmacher is the visible assistant, inherited from the 1978 films. Angela is the technical equal: de Faría said, after the fact, that she played a mutual respect with Hoult, distinct from Eve’s relationship. This is not a plot shown as a couple on screen; it is an actress’s reading, not a script fact to cite as canon.

What is in the film is the hierarchy: Lex commands, the Engineer executes what the nanotech body allows, Eve runs the media and logistics machine. Mixing up the two women means missing the casting. Comic-book Lex has already had scientific lieutenants; Angela was not one of them before 2025.

She is not Metamorpho either, prisoner then ally. Rex Mason changes element; Angela changes machine. Two transformed bodies, two sides, two files.

The Authority, Man of Tomorrow, and after

In 2023, DC Studios places a The Authority film in the first chapter of the DCU, “Gods and Monsters”. In spring 2026, that project was no longer in active development. Nothing requires Angela to return there, nothing forbids it. Wikipedia and the dispatches also note a planned appearance in Man of Tomorrow (2027). Until the film is out, we do not ascribe to her a redemption, a death, or a rallying to The Authority.

The most coherent approach is to hold both versions at once: the 1999 heroine, the 2025 villain. The DCU can join the two later. Today the shop character is the one from the film — and the comic remains the source, not the user manual.

Three misconceptions about The Engineer

  • She is a robot built by Lex. No. In the comics, Angela Spica is a scientist who replaced her blood. In the film, she is a woman, not a LexCorp android.
  • She has always been a DC villain. No. The Authority #1 (1999) makes her a heroine. The enemy side is a choice of the 2025 film.
  • She has the same function as Eve Teschmacher. No. Eve is the visible assistant. Engineer is the nanotech combat operator. Two roles, two actresses.

Key takeawayThe Engineer is Angela Spica, created in 1999 for The Authority. The 2025 film, with María Gabriela de Faría, flips her side and places her with Luthor. Both versions coexist: the comic explains the power, the film explains why the DCU made her an opponent.

Conclusion

For the opposing camp, Hoult as Luthor and the Lex file supply the brain; Engineer supplies the weapon-body. For the team on the other side, Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl are the reverse shot of the same film.

The Gunn era did not adapt The Authority: it borrowed one of its heroines and flipped her. That is a 2025 fact, not a betrayal to comment on. The DCU file closes by holding both.
